Writing Lists

I love old fashioned, paper lists that I can cross off when I'm done with something.  It helps me bring order to a crazy day and quiet my mind.  Once I write something down, my mind is free to let it go, for some reason.

My love of lists is one reason I absolutely loved this post by Rachel Stafford.  Rachel was a special education teacher, and used lists very successfully with her students for behavior management. She explains  how her approach was to break tasks down into small steps, so there would be no confusion what was expected from her students.  She also set positive expectations with students explaining that she couldn't wait to see how many happy faces were on their self-monitored lists.  She gave her students the power of the list.  She explained that adults do the very same thing.  Adults call these lists "to-do" lists- but it's really just a list that anyone can make to help stay focused on what needs to be done each day.  Click on the picture below to read her article. It's a great one.

List writing is a wonderful skill for children to learn as they begin to feel comfortable hearing sounds in words and getting those sounds down on paper as letters and eventually words.  It's so exciting when children actually see that they can communicate by writing. "List Writing" isn't a genre of writing, but it's a practical way for children to see the importance of knowing how to get what they want to say down on paper neatly, so they can actually READ what they write down- and others can, too. And... it never hurts to remind them that they are in good company, writing lists! Some very important people write lists...

I like to introduce list writing with Frog and Toad's story, The List.   I wrote HERE about how I love to use Frog and Toad books for so many things.  Now is the time of year I begin reading these stories to my class.  The children are ready for stories with some more words/less pictures, and they get the subtle humor in the books.

Here is an overview of the story from Amazon:
  • A List: Toad wakes up one morning and decides to write a list of things to do for the day. After writing the list and doing the first few items on it (wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed, and go to Frog's house), he goes over to Frog's house and invites him to take a walk with him. During the walk, while Toad is crossing off "Take walk with Frog," a sudden gust of wind blows away the list. Frog tries to catch the list, but to no avail. As Toad can't remember what else was on the list, he and Frog just sit and do nothing until night falls and Toad suddenly remembers that going to sleep was the last thing on his list, which is what the two friends do.
When I taught my own children writing, we used to always warm up by writing a list of something - even when they were in upper grades.  It's a great way to get your mind thinking of different ideas.  In fact, I made a list of list ideas- how is that for a list!  You could use this list with any age, really.  Click on the picture below if you would like a copy.

Here's how the activity looks in kindergarten.  After we read the story, I gave a topic to the kids (like farm animals, ice cream flavors, blue things, big things, small things...the topics on the list above!). They turned and talked to a friend about all of the items they could list for that topic.

This sounds easy, but it's actually a very good exercise for the children to have to stay on topic and only list items that would fit the category.  I rang a bell after a minute or so and moved onto the next topic, so it was a fast moving activity.

After we practiced a few times, I had to kids go back to their seats to write a few lists of their own.
Some of them even illustrated their lists!  Once I ooohed and aaaahed about these illustrations, guess what everyone else started to do?! It was great.

When we teach children to write, we're always trying to think of authentic ways to make writing important for them.  During free choice, my children love writing grocery lists on strips of paper I have cut for them.  They love taking orders and playing restaurant- (and if I use the REAL waiter/waitress pads, which I also LOVED when I was little, it is even so much better!  I got a whole huge pack of these at Sam's Club.).

They love writing down lists for the animals they take care of in the vet center.
They write lists of friends' names when they play school.

They copy titles of books and write lists of books when they play library.

Anybody who questions the validity of free choice for children has never spent time in a classroom with children during free choice time, because it is one of the richest academic parts of the day when you are five.

When I think of what I want my children to be able to do, to be able to accomplish even as they graduate high school, I want them to be effective communicators, problem solvers, risk takers, and to be able to work well together in groups... THESE are great goals and exit outcomes for any student leaving high school, and these are exactly the skills developed during free choice time in kindergarten.

Play in the classroom is a tangent I often drift off to because I am passionate about play for children ... (HERE is one post I wrote about the importance of PLAY in the classroom, and HERE is a post with more about my Play Every Day Prezi that I made about just that...)  It's important that  the people who make educational decisions, but are not in the classroom, understand its essential role in children's lives.

Here's another quick side note about Frog and Toad books, I  made a Frog and Toad Prezi (free at my TPT store) that I use all the time in the spring when we are watching our eggs (and reading these stories!).  It has lots of videos of the stories, videos about frogs and toads, ideas, games, and charts to use if you are reading Frog and Toad, or having a science lesson about frogs and/or toads!

I hope you have a wonderful week!

What I'm Loving Wednesday & Liebster Answers

I am linking up with Covered in Glitter and Glue for What I'm Loving Wednesday!

1.  First of all, my daughter got married this past weekend. It was so beautiful and fun- and I just loved these pictures of my husband dancing with Ellie.

2.   I was looking at my pictures this morning and realized that I look at this sweet, sweet picture of my friend's daughter EVERY DAY- and it just gives me such joy every single time.

My friends adopted  5 precious children and have one of their own.  Four of the children have Down's Syndrome.   My other friend- her sister- adopted 3 children- two with DS.  They are the SWEETEST children in the world and just make me happy- so I had to include them in the love today!  The children's classroom is at the end of the hall in my school, so they are going back and forth lots during the day for hugs- well not really just for hugs -PROBABLY the teacher would say for other things... , but I get LOTS of hugs, so I feel like they go back and forth all day just for me! :) How is that for love?!  LOVE.

3.  I also LOVE  Rachel Macy Stafford's blog Hand Free Mama.

These posts The Day I Stopped Saying Hurry Up and Notice the Good are so beautiful.  Everything she writes is, really.  It just makes you cry think.   ;)

4.  Another post I loved this week was  Dan Pearce's Tired of Running.  I also LOVE You Just Broke Your Child. Congratulations . I love his blog, Single Dad Laughing. (Have I used "LOVE" an appropriate number of times?! )

Now for some-

LIEBSTER ANSWERS!

I want to thank Ms. Lindle at Lindle's Little Learners and  my wonderful blogging friend Serena at Magic Mistakes and Mayhem for nominating me for the Liebster Award.  You are both so very sweet and I am so honored that you nominated me. :) I already nominated some blogs, but I will answer some questions about me.  :)

First- from Lindle Little Learners:

1. If you could teach any grade level, which grade level would it be and why?
I love, love, love Kindergarten because they are so sweet and eager to learn and love learning.
2. What is your favorite subject to teach and why?
I really enjoy teaching reading- and also science and health because the children are so excited to learn and remember new things.
3. Do you have a classroom theme? If so how often do you change themes?
My classroom is mainly primary colors. Our school was an old middle school so the rooms are NOT primary rooms (no space, no sink, no storage... haha) And we can't have fabric up at all - so I try to make it a happy, bright place for everyone.
4. What is your favorite thing about teaching?
Really listening to the children and getting to know them- and those moments when you "see" the learning happen!
5. How long have you been blogging?
Since last March!
6. What is your favorite school related app or computer program to use?
Prezis!!!
7. What is your favorite non-school related app or computer program to use?
Does Candy Crush count?  I am really not good at it... but oh so hopeful...
8. Do you have iPad's in your classroom?
Yes, we each have 5 iPads in the classroom.
9. What technology would you be lost without?
Probably my school computer.
10. Do you have a Promethean Board or Smart Board in your classroom?
Smartboard- love it!
11. What other types of technology do you have in your classroom?
We had 5 desktop computers last year, but I think they are being taken out this year and we will only be using the iPads.

OK Serena... Here I go!!! :)

1. If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life what would it be?
I will probably say chicken or pizza- cause I could change them up a little.

2. What do you do when you're not teaching, reading about teaching, thinking about teaching, planning for teaching or shopping for teaching?
Walking, talking or texting  with my kids, parents, husband, or friends, taking a fabulous nap on weekends, shopping some.
3. Do you prefer cheese or chocolate?
Cheese- cause too much chocolate gives me canker sores. :(   And I do love my CHEESE!

4. What is one of your pet hates?
WOW- I kind of love this question- it sounds way more serious than pet peeves!  Hmm- my pet hates are mean people ( cliché  but OH SO TRUE), dull pencils, rough fingernails or when I break a fingernail in the middle of something and can't stop to fix it- and I obsess over it,  people not using grammar or spelling correctly, the fact that I can not see up close anymore without glasses, and when people call me Carol not Carolyn- ok- that last one isn't a "hate" that is a pet-dislike.  WOW- they just flowed right out of me. Kind of scary.

5. If you could live in another country for a year (and teach) where would you choose?
Maybe Australia- that sounds very pretty.

6. If you could choose any country to go to for a holiday where would you go?
I would settle for a holiday in the USA to start with... :)

7. Do you sing loudly when no one is around to hear? (Or even better when people are around to hear) Yes!  And the only other time is in front of people who are 5 or 6.

8. If you had to choose between not being able to smell anything or not being able to taste anything what would you choose?
OOO Good one!  WOW.   I would add them right to my pet HATES. They both would be so horrible.
I guess not tasting. That drives me crazy even when I have a cold!

9. What is your all time favourite movie?
It seems to be whatever romantic comedy I have just seen.  I love those Nicholas Sparks movies.  OH- here you go- Anne of Green Gables and Cinderella.  BAM!  :)  Loved them both.

10. What's your favourite music/ band or artist?
I love listening to Michael Henry and Justin Robinett.  They play piano and sing cover songs together and are SO good and easy to listen to.  (I know- ending with a preposition is incorrect grammar...  It does sort of drive me crazy but I am leaving it just to become more tolerant.)

11. When you were a little kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
I do remember wanting to be a maid and clean toilets when we would go on vacations.  I wanted to be a waitress, and did that and really enjoyed that after high school.  I always wanted to be a teacher and played school all the time with my stuffed animals. I remember pulling down the shade in my bedroom and showing my "class" movies with our View Master projector- so yeah- teacher!

My couple random points would be that
1. I write and eat with my left hand, but do practically everything else with my right hand.

2. Everything I seem love goes away- like Lipton Cherry Almond tea, Hollister Ryder perfume, Victoria Secret Sweet Cravings mood lotion,  Coffee mate Chocolate Raspberry creamer... I am like an "anti- marketing whiz!" If I like it- it is sure to go away- so ... beware!  (only material things, fortunately... NOT like people! haha That would sound so emo!)

Thank you again so much for thinking of me.  You made my day!  :)

Hands Free Mama

I really love the blog Hands Free Mama .

I knew I enjoyed reading Rachel's blog, but lately, as I am seeing more and more precious children out for summer vacation, wanting so much to be noticed by parents who are so caught up with their cell phones that they don't even notice the precious faces and precious moments they are missing right in front of them,  I love her even more.

The other day in a restaurant, I saw a mother come in with three beautiful children.  The oldest were maybe 3 and 5, and the baby was in a car seat.  The little boy and girl sat in their chairs so sweetly as their mother barely looked up from her phone once.  I was heartbroken for what she doesn't even know she is missing.  It took me back to so many sweet memories with my children, who are now  almost 23, 21, and 19. The most special memories that I always go back to are not the thousand dollar trips and well-planned, perfect, video-taped  holidays.  My most precious memories are the moments.  The silly conversations over a Frosty or the unexpected giggles over one silly thing one of my children and I both noticed, shared, and will have for the rest of our lives as a "remember when" moment.

I am thankful for my cell phone. I appreciate the safety it provides and the comfort of knowing I my friends and family are only a click away.  But I am really not sad that I didn't have one when my children grew up. It is robbing so many people of the joys and the life right in front of them, if they would only look away from the screen and notice.

I applaud Rachel so much for her commitment making memories, not "to-do" lists, as she says, about "letting go to grasp what really matters. "

Sometimes, people are so afraid that they are missing the big stuff , that the small stuff is passing right by. Unfortunately, the 'small stuff' grows up way too quickly.
